Do you clip bolts, plug cams, stack pads, or crush ice?
I'm a trad climber at heart... but I'm trying to step up my sport climbing and ice/mixed games this year.
How long have you been an athlete with La Sportiva?
What are some of your lifetime climbing goals?
Oh, wow. There are so many. I'm on the hunt for the perfect crack pitch... I'm not positive what that would really even be, but the searching part sure is fun. And there are some specific mountains I'd like to climb: Fitzroy, for sure; and Trango Tower -- your typical alpine rock climber's dreams. Really, though, for me it's all about moving forward and keeping psyched. I guess that's the purpose of the big life goals.
Do you have a claim to fame?
My book -- Flakes, Jugs, and Splitters: A Rock Climber's Guide to Geology -- won a Banff Book Award this year. That was pretty fun.
Do you have any vices?
What makes you tick as a climber and in the real world?
I think my life is steered in a lot of ways by my curiosity and by my love of the mountains.
What drives you to climb? The money? The groupies? The fame? What?
For me, it's all about exploring and having adventures. Climbing gives me a way to explore the world with such intensity -- both physically and mentally, at the same time. I love that.
What is your favorite movie?
The Goonies, Shopgirl, Planet Earth ... lots of favorites.
Do you have any nicknames? Explain:
Garlick, Garlique, and other variations on the theme. It was worse as a kid.
What’s the longest you’ve gone without sleep? Why?
I don't think I've gone longer than about 36 hours, but that's happened a bunch of times: twice climbing in Patagonia, and then the last push to meet my deadline for my book. I don't mind an all-nighter here and there, but I get pretty loopy starting in on the second night.
If you had to be named after one of the 50 states, which would it be?
Maybe some variation on Carolina, since that's where I grew up.
What did you have for lunch yesterday?
If you could hook up a thought monitor to your head, would you see pictures, hear words or would music be playing?
Words, definitely. Lots of random little phrases that probably make no sense.
What really scares you about climbing?
Rappelling and rock fall... and I guess rock fall while rappelling.
If your life was made into a movie, what would it be called?
Oh, wow. I have no idea. Ask me in a few years!
Where would you live if it could be anywhere in the world?
Where I live right now: North Conway, New Hampshire. (But, um, I'd also have a house in Chamonix and one in the San Juans, too.)
Have no food or have no gasoline?
No gasoline. I don't mind a good, long walk every now and then!
Do you wish you had sexier feet?
Not if that meant I had to stop having fun adventures in order to keep them that way!
