Do you clip bolts, plug cams, stack pads, or crush ice?

I'm a dedicated boulderer and I love it. However I usually end up at the sport crag once or twice a year and I do have a good time. I went deep water soloing in Mallorca once and I thought that was completely amazing. If I had regular access to that kind of climbing maybe I'd switch.

How long have you been an athlete with La Sportiva?

Not long at all.

What are some of your lifetime climbing goals?

My lifetime climbing goal is simple: Always keep improving. I just want to be a better boulderer however I can.

Do you have a claim to fame?

I have disproportionately large biceps. Is that a claim to fame?

Do you have any vices?

Potato chips for sure. I went through a period where I would eat between two or three family sized bags of chips each week. I really love them. I also spend a lot of time watching climbing videos on the internet.

What makes you tick as a climber and in the real world?

As a climber, I'm psyched on wide static lock-offs from small crimps on a 45 degree overhanging distinct independent boulder problem. In the real world, climbing and good food is what makes me tick.

What drives you to climb? The money? The groupies? The fame? What?

It's truly a combination of three things. First, it's about improving my ability and skill as a boulderer - doing moves I couldn't do before and getting stronger. Second, it's about meeting new people and making new friends - sharing the experience and enjoyment with as many people as I can. Third, it's about collecting and building lists - lists of climbs I've done, lists of places I've been, and lists of memories I've created.

What is your favorite movie?

Oh man - this is such a tough question. I really love movies, everything from the sticky theatre floor to the remote control for the t.v. I could go on and on about it, but I'd have to say that Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro is my favourite movie ever, followed by Steven Soderberg's Ocean's 11 and Takashi Kitano's Zatoitchi: The Blind Swordsman.

Do you have any nicknames? Explain:

Chief Heerema (because sometimes I climb with a feather in my hair) Heerema (said with a quick Japanese accent, because I'm a Ninja) Crack Boy (because I'm not the heaviest guy around) Chicken Legs (because if it got any worse my thighs would be as wide as my calves)

What’s the longest you’ve gone without sleep? Why?

I don't think I've ever gone an entire twenty four hours without some little bit of sleep. There was a flight to France where I didn't get any "real" sleep overnight but then we konked out early that night.

If you had to be named after one of the 50 states, which would it be?

No self-respecting Canadian would ever entertain being named after an American state. Let's get serious. If I had to choose a Canadian province / territory, I'd choose Nunavut because it sounds cool.

What did you have for lunch yesterday?

I was bouldering in Hueco Tanks yesterday. My wife made me homemade BBQ steak burritos with avocado and pico de gallo. I also had some granola bars, peanuts, coconut wafers, an apple and gummy bears.

If you could hook up a thought monitor to your head, would you see pictures, hear words or would music be playing?

I don't know. It'd probably just be a bunch of random thoughts running all the time. Words I guess.

What really scares you about climbing?

Nothing about climbing scares me.

If your life was made into a movie, what would it be called?

I'm not sure what it would be called but hopefully it could be directed by Guy Ritchie. Maybe it would be called Lucky.

Where would you live if it could be anywhere in the world?

Oh wow. If I could live anywhere in the world it would have to be near Chattanooga. The amount of cool boulders down there is amazing. The BBQ down in that region would seal the deal for me. Or maybe I'd live in Valencia, or maybe Las Vegas, or maybe...

Have no food or have no gasoline?

I'd have to go with having no gasoline.

Do you wish you had sexier feet?

Actually for a climber my feet are in pretty good condition. I have square shaped heels and calluses on my toe knuckles but those are no big deal. If I was given the choice to make something sexier I wouldn't choose my feet.
