Favorite climbing area?

Yosemite. Why is there only one? It must be magic. Big walls, perfect cracks, exceptional face climbing, postcard waterfalls, curious bears, tame deer, towering trees and a community that is drawn by the same magic.

What was your scariest climbing moment?

In 1990 I feel 30 metres off of Middle Triple Peak in Alaska. We were 60 miles out from a pick up. We skied out. It was a challenge. I thought I had died, woke up awake, and had a 240 volt surge. I spent the next month nursing a broken back with tubs of ice cream and Trent Reznor.

Who are your heroes/role models?

The humble bee keeper.

Do you have any pre-climb rituals?

I loosen my shoulders by swinging them in circles, blow in my shoes and put my left boot on first. For summit day on big peaks I bring a pair of brand new socks.

What do you do when you're not climbing?

At home I study with our children. Their education is my highest aim.

What are your climbing goals?

In 2008 I have set a goal of 4 5.12s and two easy 5.13s. This keeps in training and is a motivation to stay strong. I have a few big mountain goals, but those, my friend, are bad luck to go on about before departure. I would like to ski from Bozeman, MT to Jackson, WY one winter. Across the Yellowstone caldera.
